Best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Fuerteventura, Canary Island, Spain

Best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Fuerteventura, Canary Island, Spain

Fuerteventura is the largest of the Canary Islands and it is one of the best short trips from continental Europe where to find an “eternal spring” and reliable winds. We have visited the island in many occasion and we share our review of the best places to go windsurfing rentals.

Corralejo Viejo (Beginner/Intermediate)

The easiest spot on the island, it is ideal for beginners to intermediate windsurfers (no kiters allowed!). It has everything you need to enjoy a session, and relax with family and friends (rental, bar, restaurants, sunbeds, showers).

The spot works well with South/South East winds, and a bit less in spring/summer. Only problem is a rocky entrance to the water, which can be a bit problematic. Good value for money for rentals at Ventura Surf.

PROs

  • Central location in Corralejo
  • Sunbeds, bars, showers available
  • Nice rental option for SUP & Windsurf (Goya, Attitude, Gasstra)

CONs

  • Entrance to the water with rocks
  • Boat traffic (harbor proximity)
  • No kite allowed
  • Rental people is not very friendly

Flag Beach (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

Flag beach with Island of Lobos in the backgroup

Flag Beach is a popular spot among kiters and windsurfers. It has a good rental FlagBeach.com and can be very funny when the swell brings some waves. It works mostly in summer but some days in winter can also be pleasant. The spot works well with North/North East winds (side/side-on).

PROs

  • Just 4km south of Corralejo
  • Sunbeds, bars available
  • Nice rental option at FlagBeach.com
  • Large sandy beach

CONs

  • First 10 meters have rocks
  • No showers
  • No toilets
  • No restaurant

Glass Beach a.k.a El Burro (Intermediate/Advanced)

Glass Beach

The wave spot closest to Corralejo, Glass Beach is a very magical spot. In winter times is not special, but during spring and summer it can have waves up to 2 meters. It has rocks on the sides but a sandy bottom. Works best with North/North East winds.

PROs

  • Great scenery in Corralejo Dunes
  • Wild atmosphere
  • Wave spot
  • Nice sandy beach

CONs

  • No showers
  • No toilets
  • No restaurant
  • No sunbeds
  • No safety!!!!

Costa Calma (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

Costa Calma should be a chapter apart, but for sake of completeness I am going to keep it in this post. Costa Calma is a touristic resort 60kms south of Corralejo built in the 60’s and today is dominated by German tourists. In Playa de Sotavento, Costa Calma offers the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura and the most exciting rental options for windsurf and kitesurf.

Rene Egli Kitesurf Windsurf & Kitesurf

Rene Egli center and the lagoon

The “king of windsurfing and kitesurfing”, Rene Egli is a Swiss windsurfer who made this spot the most reknown of the island. It lies next to the Hotel Melia Gorriones hotel ( which is part of) and offers around 450 windsurf boards, 1000 sails, 250 kiteboards and 600 kites.
The location is simply excellent for any level, and equipment is top of the league. As a matter of facts, this is the location of the PWA Windsurf World Championship every July. Works best with North/North East winds.

PROs

  • Great sandy location
  • Perfect for any level
  • Windsurf and Kitesurf options
  • Great material
  • Showers, toilets, changing rooms
  • Foil rental

CONs

  • No bar (no drinks available!!)
  • Far from anything
  • Expensive

ION Center Fuerteventura (Costa Calma)

The ION Center Fuerteventura center lies at the bottom end of the Playa de Sotavento. It has a more relaxed atmosphere than Rene Egli, but it’s rental options are not less interesting. The center has everything one needs to enjoy wind, sun and waves.

PROs

  • Great sandy location
  • Perfect for any level
  • Windsurf and Kitesurf options
  • Great material
  • Free sunbeds, showers, toilets and changing rooms
  • Less expensive than Rene Egli

CONs

  • No bar (no drinks available!!)
  • Far from anything

In conclusion, Fuerteventura offers great options for any level of windsurfing. Some may prefer to rent out their kit and go alone in some other spots. This is also a good option, but for those who like to travel “light” I believe these to be the best options you can find.
Enjoy the ride!
